Worship Team

PAUL WHITFIELD

It’s an absolute privilege to lead worship in church, and one I don’t take lightly. What a responsibility to choose the songs the church will be worshipping with!

To be able to use my gifts for God is both an honour and exciting. It’s been great to see our team grow together over the past year as we continue to move forward and strive for excellence. Worship for me is not only a lifestyle but also on a Sunday it is a wonderful opportunity to leave the troubles of the week behind and lift up my heart and voice to Jesus, to praise him, to thank him for who he is and for all he’s done.

The responsibility of being one of the worship leaders at NLCC isn’t without its challenges but it is awesome to look out and see the church lifting their hands and being brought into God’s presence. We have come so far but we also have a long way to go. I look to the future with excitement and wonder what God will do next!

The best is yet to come!

 ANT LEE

I have been part of seeing the worship team grow and develop as I have worked here at NLCC for just over two years. As the youth

minister I have also had the great pleasure of working with some of our young musicians and helping them to grow and develop, both musically and spiritually. Here at NLCC I head up the leading of

the worship team, alongside Paul, and feel it is a great privilege to be working with these talented and gifted people and to see the church grow in worship to God. We have been witness to some amazing things happening at NLCC in recent months and I am excited about the things God has for us as a worship team, and as a church, in the future.

The Worship Team

Our vision for the musicians is to build a strong musical backing for the worship, being creative and expressive in how we work together and arrange the music to bring the best out of the songs and to aid people most in worship. By working to develop our skill level and learning new things we are constantly trying to be better at our instruments and how we play together.

We have experimented with different formations for leading, we want to increase diversity and so each week we now have 2 worship leaders leading, we would like to see all vocalists be able to contribute to the leading of worship.

We are constantly developing deeper. It’s an ongoing journey to reach a place of total abandonment to the Holy Spirit.

To keep worship fresh and focused we have a list of 30 songs, which we change 1/3rd of each month we keep songs, which work well and aim to bring in a new song each month. We are aiming to have ½ of our 30 songs written within the house.

We are trying to develop a songwriter’s forum to develop the writing culture and expression within the church.

As singers, our  aim is to encourage and get the best out of our singing team. With the help of others in the group we work out harmonies for the songs and trying to pitch the songs in a suitable key for the whole group and for the church congregation to sing.

With new material, initially the singing team rehearse separately from the musicians, learn their part, and then come together with the musicians. This works well when working out new vocal parts.

We are developing a church choir and to encourage anyone within the church to come forward, should they be a committed Christian and have a heart for worship, and be able to sing. We have an audition procedure for potential new members.

I would like to encourage all singers to be able to lead a song and to feel confident enough to do this in a church meeting. We have also touched upon microphone technique.

In the future we are planning to have more “in-house” song writing sessions and increase the number of original compositions for our church.

The Team

  • We have spent much of our time over the last year, strengthening the team working out how we play and interact together as musicians and worshipers. It has been a year of many changes as we have been experimenting with different ideas; different rota patterns arrangements of musicians and singers. We have learned a lot together over the last year, about how we play together, learning to read each other and becoming more organic in how we flow as a team. We have created our own new team dynamics with the creating two support roles for Paul Whitfield and Ant Lee.
  • Kay Cox – works with Paul Whitfield supporting the singers, creating vocal arrangements.
  • Joann Wareham – supporting Paul Whitfield and Ant Lee in pastorally looking after the team with a focus on the women in the team.

The Leaders

  • Paul Whitfield – Is responsible overall for the singers and singing arrangements. Working with Kay Cox over the last year, we have created some great vocal arrangements. By doing small group vocal workshops and creating parts with in songs, it has increased the confidence of all the singers to know which notes to sing where. It has also meant we have been able to create space for the singer within our over all arrangements. Paul and Kay still have a vision to create a bigger and more diverse group of singers with opportunity for a choir in the future.

  • Ant Lee– is responsible for the musicians. Over the last year we have spent time learning new songs both songs from other songwriter and some written with in the church. We have worked hard on how we play together; working to the principle of less is more. We have to be creative using all the gifts within the team in our arrangements of song. Ant has spent many hours crafting and shaping songs, to bless and build the church  to date we sing 5 songs written by Ant over the last year. The songs are part of our journey as a church and as a worship team reflecting back on what God has been doing in our times together.
