Once a month the church utilises the facilities at the Othello’s Café on Kirkgate to reach out to the local community.
Owners Graham and Kathryn Dunwell do an amazing job preparing food and serving hot drinks throughout the evening and we have a very faithful team of 25 different members of the church who go onto the streets and invite anyone they meet into the café.
The food and drink are offered free of charge and we are grateful to Graham and Kathryn and Earle Heasman for sponsoring this each month.
We meet people of all ages in very different circumstances and are able to talk to them and, where appropriate, refer them to agencies and groups that may be able to help them.
Some have begun attending church and one, Lee Turner has become very much part of the group and is involved in helping others at Othello’s in the week.
Numbers attending vary and are dependent on the weather, the time of year and the people who are actually able to go out on the streets to invite people in. In the year we have had between 11-44 people in attendance and all appreciate the warmth, the welcome and of course the food.
We had two ‘specials’ in the year where we were able to attract more people and offer a different programme, that is, a Christmas buffet with Scott Lavery and band and at Easter 2016 for the Big Feast.
The latter was the fulfilment of a vision given to Graham and saw people served with a full roast meal and an Easter egg afterwards. The evening was sponsored by local people and businesses including Crawshaws butchers and Sainsbury’s.
The outreach gives members of the church the opportunity to learn how to reach out to others and, for those more experienced, to hone their skills in showing the love and compassion of God.
