Community Awareness Programme (CAP) was formed in September 1997 from a desire by Ernest and Elisabeth Hibbert at New Life to try and meet some of the needs of the homeless and disadvantaged in the Wakefield District.

The project ran originally from the church but since 2004 has operated from a Resource Centre at No 7. Wood Street and is open 5 days a week. Clients are referred from other Service Providers in Wakefield and visit CAP for food, clothing, household goods, toiletries, a snack meal and shower, advice, counselling and to meet with any number of our social partners.

The project is funded and resourced by public and private donations and is headed by six trustees and a team of 40 dedicated volunteers from around the city

The project also received 5 year funding (w.e.f 2008) from the Big Lottery amounting to nearly half a million pounds-we aim to be self funding by 2013.

We work in Partnerhip with WMDC, DIP, Turning Point, VOX,VAWD,and West Yorkshire Police who use CAP  as a placement opportunity for police officers under training.

Ernest and Elisabeth Hibbert were awared the Yorkshire Heroes Community Award in 2008 at the Hilton Hotel in Leeds and y were interviewed on BBC TV Look North

A clear purpose and a set of core Christian values underpin all the Trusts services and aims.

Original aims and objectives: People in acute poverty, including homeless, will have their basic and immediate needs met. i.e. fed, washed and clothed. These people will then be offered support, help and counselling to help them cope with emotional and social difficulties.  Through signposting they will be referred on to other relevant agencies i.e.  Turning Point WMDC Open Door project to help them escape the acute need of their current situation.

Continued liaison with the West Yorkshire Police. Community work with training trainee officers and PCSO’s, and  with the community safety team.

Partnership with Green Pastures – Southport based Charity providing clients who have reached measured criteria in rehabilitation to be housed.  These clients will be outside of the local authority ‘Duty of Care’, our houses are now being managed by Informal Learning a branch of the Saviour’s Trust Pontefract.

We are continuing to work with satellite projects in other areas of the Wakefield ‘5 towns’ along with interested churches and community groups.

We are currently involved with two satellite projects, one in Pontefract working with a church based outreach to ex offenders (Saviour’s Trust ) and one in Castleford who principally deal with homeless people and addicts.

We still take an active role in the local crime prevention initiative and local homeless strategy forums, and again visited local schools to talk on drug awareness and the plight of homeless people.

We are also actively involved in visits to other organisations Church groups, Rotary clubs, Women’s Institute, Probus and other clubs presenting by multimedia the work we are involved in and also raising awareness of the national picture on homelessness and substance abuse.

March 08 saw the start of a new term of funding by The Big Lottery over a five-year term; this gives us the continuity we need until we can secure permanent funding.

The Big Lottery provided the funding for a van and also a part time driver for our warehouse facility.  We took delivery of the vehicle at the beginning of June, along with the employment of our driver. The warehouse came on stream in July 08 and Barry has become a valued member of the team.  Our warehouse has been extremely busy, and is almost filled to capacity with goods   It has been great to be able to provide the extra services of furniture and household goods to service users.

We are now working on a programme of enterprise to provide the permanent funding for the service. This will provide work and a living wage for the clients, while at the same time profits supporting the core funding for the project.

Future plans:

  • We are in discussion with Queen Elizabeth Grammar School to work with six form in social studies, working with them in Wood St.
  • To Facilitate Extra activities i.e. training in cookery, resulting in food hygiene cert.
  • To employ a Project worker to work in conjunction with the enterprise scheme
  • To Facilitate employment for clients, and a retail outlet.
  • To expand on our current programmes.
